Teacher workshop on using Puppetry as a a tool
A teacher workshop, ‘ Role of Puppetry in Education ‘ was held at Springdales School on 22nd February 2020 where Ms. AnjumTandon and Ms. Shikha Yadav represented The Indian School-Second Shift. The workshop aimed at providing hands’ on information about using puppets as a creative teaching tool. At the workshop, Hashim and Sangya, founders of ‘The Puppetarians’ introduced the basics of puppetry and its varied forms practiced all over the world. We were astonished to be told about how dynamic the art is and the extent of its impact. Participants were then shown how to create their own glorified sock puppets with step-by-step assistance and supervision. Professional puppetry techniques were shared that make the puppet characters most effective. From the puppeteers’ stance to the puppets’ eye focus, lip sync, walk, singing, dancing and more, were taught to make the puppet character quite like a ‘living and breathing entity‘! To enhance the storytelling skill and to stress on peer learning, the workshop organisers demonstrated storytelling as well, using puppetry. The valuable session helped us greatly to innovate with new lesson planning techniques to better engage with the children in the classroom.
