Inter House Storytelling Competition
“There’s always room for a story that can transport people to another place.” J.K. Rowling
In every culture, in every corner of the world, storytelling has been an intrinsic part of human communication since the beginning of time. From ancient myths etched on cave walls to modern-day novels and podcasts, stories have served as the lifeblood of human connection, understanding and growth. Beyond mere entertainment, storytelling offers a myriad of benefits for both the teller and the listener, weaving a tapestry of shared experiences and profound insights.
An Inter House Storytelling Competition ‘Spin a Yarn’ was held on 15 February 2025 for the students of classes 1 to 8. The event was organised by Saturn House, with the aim of encouraging creativity, public speaking skills, and enhancing a love for literature among the young learners
The students of classes 1 and 2 showcased their storytelling skills with the aid of props. Each child narrated a story with remarkable enthusiasm and poise, making sure to spread the powerful messages of love, kindness, and life lessons. Dressed in costumes that reflected the characters they portrayed, the children fully embraced their roles, bringing the stories to life with vibrant energy. The stories narrated by the students included classics like ‘The Ugly Tree’ and ‘Jackal and the Grapes’, both of which are well-known fables that teach valuable lessons about self-worth, resilience, and the consequences of greed.
Class 3 students brought their favourite characters to life using puppets. Each participant took the stage with his and her carefully crafted puppet companions, weaving enchanting tales that captivated the audience. Among the enchanting tales presented were well-loved classics such as ‘The Fox and the Raven’, ‘Shararti Bandar’, ‘Chalak Lomdi’, ‘3 Mendak’ and ‘The Bull’.
Class 4 students created a magical atmosphere through their comical and humorous performances. Their use of hand puppets, which brought the characters of the stories to life, captured the audience’s attention and brought smiles to everyone's faces. Props such as hats, costumes, and everyday objects added to the visual appeal and helped illustrate key moments in their stories.
Class 5 participants brought their narrative to life, using a variety of techniques such as props, puppets, and expressive voice modulation. These elements added depth and intrigue to their performances, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the worlds being created.
Students of classes 6, 7 and 8 were given the opportunity to narrate a popular story and add a unique twist to conclude it. This creative twist added an exciting and imaginative element to the traditional tales, showcasing the students’ creativity and ability to think 'outside the box'.
From folklore and age-old fables to original compositions, the students enchanted the crowd with their diverse range of stories.
The event not only served as a platform for students to display their creative writing and narrative skills but also fostered a sense of healthy competition and camaraderie among the different houses. Each participant was cheered on by housemates, adding an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement to the event.
