Homage on Martyrs Day by Classes 5-9

"The tyrant dies and his rule is over, the martyr dies and his rule begins." -Soren Kierkegaard

Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) is observed in India on 30 January to honour those who laid down their lives for the nation. The date marks the assassination of  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram Godse.

Indians commemorate the day by remembering Bapu’s ultimate sacrifice for the nation and his values of non-violence, unity and morality.

On Martyrs’ Day, Indians from all around the world come together to celebrate the legacy of a great hero. The day is also chosen to honour the brave martyrs who lay down their lives for the country.

Bapu is internationally acknowledged for his doctrine of non-violence that led India to her glorious freedom. In order to pay tribute on the occasion, the students at the Indian School-Second Shift articulated Gandhi’s values and contribution by participating in an array of activities.

In fond remembrance of Gandhiji’s sacrifice and devotion, class 5 participated in a detailed discussion about Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to India and his sacrifices during the freedom struggle.

The students of class 6 made posters highlighting Gandhi’s trials and his relentless effort in the Indian freedom struggle besides his contribution to nation building.

A crusader of peace, Mahatma Gandhi left no stone unturned for the welfare and progress of India.

The students of class 7 wrote essays. An audio-visual clip was also shown depicting the significance of honesty and how it gave Gandhi the inspiration to steer a mass movement that ultimately led to India’s freedom.

To pay tribute to the great icon, the students of classes 8 and 9 made posters and prepared a presentation that conveyed the message of Mahatma’s selfless love, sacrifice and humanity which became the guiding light for generations to come. Through these activities, students were motivated to imbibe the exemplary qualities of simple living and high thinking.

A two-minute silence in memory of our martyrs was observed followed by a pledge to follow the path of truth and non-violence.

There was an amazing feeling of contentment filled with pride when the day ended with a promise to join hands and work towards building a better nation ahead.

Salute to all the martyrs! Their courage will always be remembered.
