Class 3 Excursion to the National Crafts Museum

In line with the objective of our School, namely nurturing our students in a holistic environment, excursions complement classroom learning. Towards this end, a visit to the National Crafts’ Museum was planned for the students of class III on 20 August 2019.

The visit offered a novel opportunity to observe the different art forms on display in the numerous galleries- Tribal and Rural Crafts Gallery, Gallery of Popular Culture, Textile Gallery, Gallery of Courtly Crafts, etc., to name a few.

Upon arrival at the museum, the eager group of students were ushered to the audio visual room to watch a video presentation on the museum and its uniqueness. Once the orientation was over, the well-informed young visitors were lead to the ‘village complex’ that depicted the art and culture of rural and tribal India. It was amazing to chance upon this haven of peace and tradition amid the hustle and bustle of city life! Next, the visitors toured the permanent exhibition of traditional textiles where they admired the beautiful display of ancient artefacts like looms, traditional Indian embroidered, printed and woven textiles. They were excited to see the different masks mounted on the walls in the Art Gallery. They also saw handloom items of different colours and designs pertaining to states such as Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Maharashtra etc.

The group was very enamoured of the village complex. It comprised of dwellings, courtyards etc from different parts of India, built using local materials of the respective regions. The students were fascinated to see the pottery works and also appreciated the remarkable sculpture work of the artisans.

The museum also houses an exquisite collection of embroidered textiles like the Kantha, Phulkari, Chikankari, etc from the different states. Students were also shown and told about the rich variety of sarees created using the traditional techniques of Bandhni, Ikat, Patola, Baluchari etc. 

The students returned to School joyful and mindful of their vivid glimpses of the rich cultural heritage of India.
