Anti-Child Labour Day activities
Show a child love and care, Child labour is just not fair.
World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June 12th each year to serve as a catalyst for the growing worldwide movement against child labour. Child labour and exploitation are the results of many factors including poverty, social norms condoning them, lack of decent work opportunities for adults and adolescents etc.
The Indian School-Second Shift observed the occasion, keeping in mind the theme of the year, ‘Social Justice for All. End Child Labour!’. Various activities were conducted for the students of classes 6 to 10.
The students of class 6, discussed the relevance of observing the occasion across the globe. They made PowerPoint presentations describing this global problem and shared their views. They also made posters to spread the message.
Class 7 students raised their voices against child labour by performing a nukkad natak' titled, 'Balshram Mukt Desh'. Through their street play, they showcased that child labour deprives the child of his or her rightful glorious childhood and how it interferes with the ability to attend regular school.
The students of class 8 read the story 'Children at Work' by Geeta Wolf, which gave them an insight into child abuse and consequent child labour scenarios. Later, an interactive group discussion on the need to eradicate child labour was held in class. They also made informative posters depicting the rights of children.
Classes 9 and 10, through a pictorial illustration, sensitised their fellow classmates on the need to eradicate child labour. They shared information about the root causes of child labour like poverty, the lack of access to quality education, etc. and its adverse impact on the economy.
The students also reviewed the data shared by UNICEF on child labour. They shared the possible ways to overcome the problem such as fostering stringent laws and the need to make children aware of their rights and responsibilities.
These activities enabled the young minds to brainstorm and contribute to visualising solutions to combat this global threat.
