Citizenship Programme activities in classes 1 to 5

"Every good citizen adds to the strength of a nation".

Gordon B. Hinckley

Citizenship means being a member of and supporting one's community and country. A citizen has an obligation to be informed, law abiding, and uphold basic democratic principles such as tolerance and civic responsibility. In response to concerns about children's ethical development, The Indian School-Second Shift has adopted citizenship education programmes for students to empower young citizens with life skills.

In May 2023, various activities were conducted at  different class levels on various topics like India's rich cultural heritage, the freedom struggle, the significance of our national symbols etc.

The students of class 1 participated in a ‘Show and Tell’ activity on the national symbols of India. They depicted the national symbols using flashcards, headbands, origami art, wall hangings and each ones spoke few lines on the same.

The teacher explained the significance of the colours of our tri-colour flag to the children of class 2, who then sang the famous rhyme, "Three colours of the national flag" and handcrafted beautiful tricolour pen stands using ice -cream sticks.

The topic "National Emblem of India" was introduced to the students of class 3. They learnt that the national emblem is an adaptation of the  sculpture of the Mauryan Empire. The national emblem of India along with "Satyamev Jayate" is a proud symbol of India featured in our government offices and on army and police uniforms. Students understood the different features of the emblem and their significance. They also traced an imagr of the emblem as a handmade gift in the spirit of patriotism.

The students of class 4 virtually visited  monuments of India through informative videos. This was followed by a quiz activity. The children also wrote short poems about their favourite monuments.

Class 5 learnt about Dr BR Ambedkar through videos and a classroom discussion. They tried their hand at drawing a sketch of him and noting some of his famous quotes. Students prepared and presented a skit based on selected words taken from the Preamble of the Indian constitution.

The experiential and interactive approach adopted by the teachers enabled students to learn more about their nation in a creative and enjoyable way.
