Shramdaan for Swachchata at Amar Colony on Gandhi Jayanti
The morning of 2nd October, 2019 was indeed a great one for both students and teachers of The Indian School-Second Shift. Not because it was a holiday but because we once again did our bit to ensure our planet remains clean and safe.
As a part of the citizenship initiative, on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, students joined the drive against single use plastic and did their bit to help make the city a no plastic zone. The drive was held at Amar Colony market.
The students first spoke to share what plastic pollution is, what one time use plastic means, how it is harmful, what we can do to reduce the menace. They were then joined by the local ward councilor Mr. Abhishek Dutt who appreciated the efforts of the children.
Without wasting time, the students put on their gloves and masks, picked up their empty sacks and set off on their mission “ find and kill plastic”. They ensured they picked up all the plastic waste strewn around. They looked in every nook and corner. The little environment enthusiasts were worth watching!
The students spoke to the street vendors. They asked them to show what alternatives they had started using. There was one stall that still had things wrapped in plastic and the students requested to the owner that he must use paper instead. After having collected all the waste the children returned to the collection point. As we concluded the drive the students were asked how they felt and what they learnt of this experience. It was a happy moment to hear them say, “I felt great”, “I never realised there was so much plastic in my neighborhood”. One of them announced, “I feel even one person taking a small step can lead to the change we want to see hence it’s time we begin”. One of them piped up saying; ‘ If in one hour in the morning, we collected so much, magine how much plastic trash would collect at the end of the day!’
We pondered on what Gandhiji always said, “Be the change you want to see around you”.
