World Science Day for Peace and Development

World Science Day for Peace and Development is observed annually on 10 November. It was proclaimed by the UN Educational, Scientific and UNESCO in 2001 under the UNESCO 31 C/Resolution 20 after a recommendation at the World Conference on Science in Budapest in 1999 to recognise a compact between science and society. 

World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to highlight the significant role of science in promoting peace and development in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. The purpose of the day is to make our society more sustainable.

We, at The Indian School-Second Shift, observed World Science Day for Peace and Development as a week-long event starting on 5, November and concluding on 10, November 2022. It aimed at inculcating a scientific temperament, scientific attitude and social cooperation among students. The students of classes 6 to 9 participated in this event during their regular classroom periods. 

The event started with a classroom discussion about the role of science and technology where students were informed about how science and technology affects our lives. There was also a detailed discussion on the contributions of various Indian scientists to the fields of science and technology, making the lives of mankind easier. The role of India during the COVID-19 pandemic was also discussed with the students, who enthusiastically participated in the discussion.

Students were also taken to the science labs at School  to observe specimens  experiments such as Reflection and Refraction using laser pointers, secret messages using lemon (acid) and turmeric ( indicator), fireworks in a jar (property of convection), capillary action etc. were demonstrated to them.  Students of classes 6 and 7 made projects and models, for example, a balloon-powered car, bottle bird feeder, electromagnet etc.

Many other activities such as essay writing, quiz, debate, origami and poster-making, yoga and singing under the guidance of music teachers were also held to celebrate the occasion.

The event concluded on 10, November with a message and pledge that “we will always use science and technology for the benefit of mankind”.
