World Photography Day celebration

Photographs play an important role in everyone's life. They connect us to our past, remind us of people, places, feelings and stories. They can help us to know who we are. Photography has the power to inspire people and can be a catalyst for change.
Every year on August 19 we observe World Photography Day to celebrate the art, aesthetics, science and history of photography. The day also encourages photographers from around the globe to share a single photo that encapsulates their world.
This occasion was observed at The Indian School – Second Shift with an aim to create awareness, share ideas and encourage children to take up photography. The students of Pre chool and Pre Primary proudly showcased cherished photographs featuring their families, pets and favourite places. Each child shared a few lines about these photographs creating a valuable learning experience.
Class 1 students celebrated Photography Day by discussing the invention of the camera. They drew pictures of cameras in their art files and wrote quotes like ‘A photograph keeps a moment from running away’, and ‘A picture is worth a thousand words.’
Class 2 students participated by sharing their favourite photos. This activity fostered creativity, observation and self-expression. It encouraged them to find beauty in everyday life and develop an early appreciation for the visual world.
The students of class 3 did a pictographic activity in which they shared a favourite memory using a photograph. They recapitulated the day and shared with their peers in the classroom. This enabled them to embrace love and empathy, and using their writing and speaking skills, they captivated each other's attention.
The students of class 4 made photo montages by taking pictures of their ideal picnic spots, which enabled them to showcase their ideas of a perfect picnic day. Students then presented their montages in the class. This activity fostered their learning capacity and enhanced their interpersonal skills.
In the world of photos and snaps, students of classes 5 and 6 were acquainted with fact and the history of photography. They discussed the best pictures taken by them and followed this with making posters and portraits of the pictures so clicked.
A class discussion on the significance of photography was conducted in class 7. They discussed how photography helps in expressing one’s individuality and educating others, justifying the popular statement, 'A picture is worth a million words'.
An inter-house photography competition was conducted for classes 8 and 9 to showcase their skill, ability and interest for the subject.
Through these activities on World Photography Day, the young minds understood that photography isn't just technology but a medium of expression that has the capacity to present a thousand emotions. Children celebrated this day with great enthusiasm and energy, and dedicated the day to art and aesthetics.
