World Environment Day observed across the classes

"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than one seeks." John Muir

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to sensitise the community about the importance of protecting the environment. It reminds of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations. This occasion is specially observed keeping in mind the need to conserve and spread awareness about the conditions of the environment. The day was observed at The Indian School-Second Shift with much fervour.

The little ones of Pre school celebrated the day by singing rhymes about nature A story based on protecting the environment was narrated to them, where the meaning of ‘environment’ was explained. The children created art with leaves and flowers.

The students of Pre primary curated  beautiful craft, using finger painting techniques and colours, highlighting the importance of caring for our planet and showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm.

The students of classes 1 and 2 got an excellent opportunity to explore nature through various activities, like ‘Best out of Waste’. They also wrote slogans and messages that  raised awareness about the adverse effects of single use plastic and the need for sustainable alternatives.

An interactive discussion was held in class 3 on the major global concerns, such as various forms of pollution, reasons of global warming and measures to be taken to deal with these global environmental concerns, to familiarise the students with these issues. These young citizens also took a small step towards restoring Mother Earth by planting a sapling in eco-friendly pots made of reused plastic and glass bottles. They also took a pledge to take care of these saplings and plant one every month.

A video was shown in class 4, which helped in creating awareness about various global issues, like pollution, climate change, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity etc. This was followed by a session which encouraged the students to contemplate methods of mitigating the impact of various types of environmental damage. They made wall hangings to celebrate the day and wrote slogans promoting the conservation of the planet.

The students of class 5 indulged in a fun filled activity wherein they explored an idea on reviving drought-stricken water sources around us, such as wells, tubewells, etc. They made a descriptive plan of the infrastructure that may provide relief if implemented. Students also discussed their ideas with their peers, thus, encouraging each other to think intuitively and out-of-the-box. Students took up the opportunity to honour world environmentalists by narrating their respective contributions and taking inspiration from them.

The students of classes 6 and 7 made posters on the topic, ‘Expectations vs Reality’, depicting the expected condition of our environment versus the reality. A quiz was conducted for the students on ecological concepts, sustainable practices, and global environmental issues. Through the competition, students not only reinforced their understanding of the topics but also learned new facts and solutions to cope with  environmental challenges.

The students of classes 8 and 9  presented a Nukkad Natak based on the theme of this year's World Environment Day, 'Our Land, Our Future', focusing on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. The objective was to spread awareness among the students about how pollution, climate chaos, and biodiversity decimation are turning healthy lands into desert, and thriving ecosystems into dead zones, and how each one of us is equally responsible for the same.

Our environment is one of the most essential factors for our survival on this planet. We take the initiative of observing this day at School, hoping to raise concerned citizens, who would eventually play an active role in protecting the environment.
