World Cancer Day awareness campaign

“Cancer is a word, not a sentence.”

John Diamond

World Cancer Day, observed on February 4th every year, is a global initiative aimed at increasing cancer awareness as well as promoting cancer prevention and early detection. This year the 23rd World Cancer Day was observed with the theme, "Close the Care Gap",  aimed to minimise the consequences of cancer.

On February 4, 2023, The Indian School-Second Shift marked World Cancer Day with the goal of educating students about how cancer affects people, irrespective of age, gender, and socio-economic background. Alas, there are still significant disparities in access to cancer care, and many patients still struggle to receive the right care and support as a result of structural barriers. In order to close the care gap, it is imperative that individuals take ownership of their own health and advocate for change in their communities.

Students of class 6 were sensitised about cancer. Some myths were busted and the students were made familiar with the causes, types, symptoms and treatment of cancer. To show solidarity with the warriors of the disease, students made lavender ribbon badges and wore these to honour the cause.

The students of class 7 attended a presentation on cancer awareness and designed posters to spread information. Class 8 took part in a class awareness project called "Make a change to lower the risk of cancer".

Interactive sessions were held with  students to inculcate compassion and empathy for cancer patients, and the need to become conscious about their need for love, patience and support. As someone once stated, "Cancer not only claims the life of the patient but also the joy of the family.

Do not allow it to harm your family members."
