World Book Day Activities
World Book Day, observed to change lives through developing a love for books and shared reading, was first celebrated in April 1995 as a way to help children fall in love with reading. The occasion is marked every year on April 23 to promote reading in all age groups.
In order to provide a propitious environment where young talent would learn to think , 'out of the box', a World Book Day celebration was held at The Indian School – Second Shift , wherein students participated in numerous engrossing activities like bookmark making, story weaving , comic creations, book reviewing, read aloud sessions and story book making .
For students of class 1, story-telling sessions were conducted to develop their interest in reading. They participated in an activity, 'Read Aloud', in which they read the books of their choice.
Students of classes 2 and 3 participated in a 'Bookmark making activity' based on their favourite characters. It helped them express the emotions relating to the character.
The students of classes 4 and 5, had multiple activities lined up- 'Story book making', 'Story weaving' and 'Story reviewing' . The students' intellectual skills were aroused through these activities.
Classes 6 and 7 were given a 'Calendar making activity', in which they made a calendar highlighting the birthdays of noted authors from January to December. This activity introduced them to various authors, their lives and works.
Classes 8 to 10 reviewed their favourite books and presented these with graphics and illustrations. They also enjoyed composing comic strips of stories. This was an exercise to improve cognitive ability and broaden innovative skills.
Through these various activities, the students gained a deeper understanding of the significance of reading books. It also made them more curious about different books.
