Workshop on Urban Gardening
At our School, we believe that education needs to be holistic, contextual and empowering. We have always aimed at educating children with classroom and out-of-classroom interventions, engaging students on prominent issues relating to the environment, life skills and active citizenship.
To facilitate our way of thinking, Green Creeps an initiative by Swechha, organised a gardening workshop on 1st September, 2016 for the children of classes 4 and 5. The aim of the workshop was to empower each child to grow plants without soil and other resources that may or may not be at their disposal.

Through demonstration and hands'-on activities, Green Creeps showed the children how to prepare potted plants for gardens on terraces, balconies, windows and even in kitchens and living rooms. According to them, small spaces in houses and schools could easily be converted into gardens with indoor plants (urban gardening) with a little ingenuity.
The children were exposed to a new and easy technique of planting. Recycled waste products/containers such as plastic bottles are
put to use in the garden. The children were guided on using mixed coco peat, perlite and volcanic lava rock, ingredients used in place of soil to plant saplings.
When the childrens planters were ready, they were given clear and easy instructions on how to tend them. Brimming with excitement, they couldnt wait to share their learning with those at home!
