On September 9, 2022, the students of The Indian School-Second Shift celebrated Onam to welcome the harvest and honour the return of the demon king Mahabali to Earth.
Every year Onam is celebrated by the people of Kerala by decoratinh their homes with beautiful floral rangolis or the Pookalam. Onam marks the beginning of the Malayalam year, Kollavarsham. It is a harvest festival celebrated for 10 days. During this time of the year, people engage in various festivities and cultural activities.
A special assembly was arranged at School on the occasion. The gathering was welcomed by Suryanshi of class 5, who greeted the audience with a big smile and twinkling eyes. She described the importance and gave a brief background of the festival. A dance to the Ganesh Vandana was presented by the students of class 4 and 5, as an invocation, followed by a pageant to display traditional wear worn on Onam.
To add learning, two interesting videos were shown to the children to familiarise them with this important festival from Kerala.

The students of class 3 made torans using marigold flowers, leaves and ribbon. While the students of classes 4 and 5, most deftly crafter two beautiful Pookalams on the auditorium floor. In fact all the classes were asked to the auditorium to view these. The spectacle of the thickly packed fragrant 'flower carpet' sent the young visitors into raptures!
Headmistress Ms Sheeja Menon applauded all the participants for the beautiful presentation and interacted with the audience about the festival. The air was joyous and enthusiasm-filled.
