Road Safety Week across the classes
“Safety on the road is a responsibility we all share”
Every year, National Road Safety Week is observed from January 11 to 17. Organised by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the week intends to spread awareness around road safety, which is a major concern for the authorities as well as as people at large.
Considering the theme of this year, ‘Be a Road Safety Hero’, various activities were conducted at The Indian School- Second Shift to educate the students about traffic rules and to reduce the number of road accidents that occur daily. Additionally, the consequences of reckless or negligent driving were also discussed.
The tiny tots of Pre school were actively engaged in Road Safety Week through fun and educational activities. They learnt basic road safety concepts using interactive games like ‘Red Light, Green Light’ with stop and go signals. Through art and craft, they created traffic signs and learnt their meanings. Storytelling sessions with age-appropriate road safety tales helped the children to reinforce the key lessons.
Our little Pre primary students made an attractive poster on road safety. They learned important rules, like looking both ways before crossing. The fun activities and talks helped them understand how to stay vigilant on the roads.
Class 1 students observed Road Safety Week by participating in activities like singing road safety songs, playing an online game on road safety, and making posters. They enthusiastically watched a video on traffic rules and pedestrian crossings, wherein they learnt the do’s and don’ts of road safety.
The students of class 2 were educated about traffic rules and how to use the Zebra Crossing. They participated enthusiastically in the discussion and also wrote creative slogans.
The students of class 3 curated posters and participated in an interesting quiz, followed by a discussion which in turn led to their intellectual development, enhancement of artistic skills and helped in raising awareness about the road signs and rules.
Class 4 took proactive steps to inculcate road safety measures in their lives. Traffic Signal Simulation was conducted in the classroom using the smart board as a medium of instruction, wherein they gained hands'-on experience. The children practiced stopping at red lights, crossing roads safely, and understanding basic traffic signals, fostering a practical understanding of road safety.
The students of class 5 made placards of the various road signs and explained their significance in the classroom. They also spoke about various real life situations wherein they comprehended the importance of safety on roads.
The students of class 6 held a detailed discussion on the importance of following the traffic rules. They discussed the consequences of over speeding, signal jumping, not wearing seat belts or helmets, and many other wrong practices on the road.
Via an interactive session, the students of class 7 understood the statistics of various types of road accidents in Delhi and the reasons that lead to these accidents. They also discussed how these accidents can be prevented.
An essay writing activity was held for class 8 on their understanding of road safety. The essays were then discussed and an interactive session was held to clear their misconceptions.
The students of class 9 had a class discussion and an awareness programme on sustainable mobility and traffic safety.
Road Safety Week helped enhance amongst students the respect for human life and that of others, and to inculcate the sensitivity that every life matters, thereby inspiring students to act responsibly on the road and make Indian roads the safest in the world.
