Raksha Bandhan as a lesson in equality and inclusivity

Raksha Bandhan is a cherished festival that celebrates the timeless bond of love, protection, and togetherness od siblings.

At The Indian School – Second Shift, we believe this sacred thread goes beyond tradition. Upholding the values of equality of the genders and inclusivity, we encourage students to tie rakhis to the wrists of siblings and those they care for emphasising that love and protection are universal.

The festive spirit enveloped the entire School as thr classrooms came alive with decorations, music, and joy. Everyone went home with a decorated wrist, a smile on the face, and sweets to mark the celebration.

Our Pre schoolers, with their little hands and big hearts, crafted beautiful rakhis using colour paper, stars, sequins, and other decorative items. Their excitement was palpable as they sang Raksha Bandhan songs and rhymes, soaking in the festive spirit with delight.

Pre Primary Dove celebrated in equal enthusiasm, making vibrant rakhis using a variety of colourful materials. They also engaged in Raksha Bandhan-themed colouring activities in their art files. The celebration served as an opportunity to introduce them to the value of gender equality, helping them understand that both boys and girls can care for and protect one another equally. It was a day filled with creativity, learning, and joy.

Class 1explored the theme of sustainability by designing eco-friendly rakhis. Using items such as cardboard, ribbons, pencil shavings, mirrors, origami sheets, old decorative pieces, and bindis, they created unique pieces that reflected their creativity and commitment to the environment. The activity was a memorable blend of festive tradition and conscious craftsmanship.

In Class 2, students enthusiastically participated in a rakhi-making competition that encouraged them to showcase their artistic talents. Using decorative threads, mirrors, coloured stone and flowers, they created beautiful rakhis that highlighted their skill, creativity, and love for the festival.

Students of class 3 also engaged deeply in rakhi-making, using reusable materials and imaginative props of their choice. This activity became a touching expression of their affection and dedication, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Students of classes 4 and 5 participated in the celebration with zeal and excitement, creating a variety of colourful and unique rakhis. Their work reflected not only their creativity but also their understanding of the cultural significance of the festival.

The students of classes 6, 7, and 8 took the celebration a step further by spreading a powerful message — that the bond symbolised by Raksha Bandhan is one of mutual respect, protection, and trust, shared equally between brothers and sisters. Students celebrated by making intricately designed rakhis and presenting songs, dances, and role play that portrayed the deeper meaning of the festival. Their performances emphasised that in today's world, love and responsibility are shared values, not limited by traditional roles.

A special assembly was also conducted by the students of classes 6 and 7. The event began with a soulful Saraswati Vandana, followed by a graceful dance, a thought-provoking skit, and a melodious song by the young students. In a beautiful gesture of equality, the boys tied rakhis on the girls’ wrists, symbolising mutual respect.

Our Headmistress’s inspiring words and the School song brought the celebration to a joyful close.

Also, an inter-house Rakhi Making competition was held to celebrate Raksha Bandhan and promote sustainable practices. Students showcased their creativity using eco-friendly materials to design beautiful rakhis. Jupiter House emerged the winner with its innovative and creative designs.
