Report: Self-Discovery Week 2026-27
Self-Discovery Week (2026-27) across the classes
“Invenietis Vosmetipsos: Journeying Inwards”
Following the cherished tradition of The Indian School-Second Shift, the academic session 2026-27 commenced with Self-Discovery Week. This initiative serves as a cornerstone of our pedagogical philosophy, encouraging students to identify inherent inclinations early. Through the week, students of Pre School to Class 10 participated in consciously designed activities, ensuring that they embark on their academic journey with a clear sense of identity.
The youngest learners of Pre School began by familiarising themselves with their new peers and mastering the routine of systematising their belongings. Their social development was nurtured through collective collages of their favourite things and spirited enactments of cartoon characters. Creativity was sparked through the crafting of handmade welcome cards, while the week concluded with "Happy Health" stories and role-plays, teaching the importance of personal hygiene and nutrition.
In Pre primary, students enjoyed a week of vibrant expression, decorating their names and sharing family stories. A highlight was the "Treasure Basket" activity, where children brought in meaningful items from home, exploring the concept of "self" with newfound confidence.
Class 1 students participated in "Family Portrait" sessions and "Show and Tell" activities about their hobbies, bridging the gap between home and school. By creatively using recycled materials for craft projects, they reflected on their daily lives through the lens of innovation.
In Class 2, children embarked on a spatial journey by creating "Identity Clouds" to map their place in the universe. In the activity "Meri Pasand, Mera Jahan," students created self-portraits and introduced themselves through descriptive prose, anchoring their identity in their immediate environment.
Class 3 integrated art and logic by creating "Mathematical Mirrors"—self-portraits built using 2D shapes and symmetry. They also explored future aspirations through "Mera Sapno ka Gantavya," illustrating dream destinations and articulating their personal pull toward these locations.
A collaborative atmosphere was fostered in Class 4 through a "We can’t wait to learn..." anchor chart, where children committed to new skills using thumb impressions later transformed into animal or bird art. They also designed "Dreams on a Timeline," a vision board activity emphasising consistent effort, while reflecting on personal strengths and areas for growth.
Class 5 explored themes of journey and empathy. They designed "suitcase flip-cards" and wrote narrative poems titled "If I were a Migratory Bird" to understand the emotions of change. This was complemented by "Mapping my Memories" travelogues, where they designed timelines of past travels to understand sequencing and personal growth.
In Class 6, students visualised their internal landscapes through "Creative Cartography," mapping personality traits as physical landmarks. Scientific curiosity was piqued through "Family Trait Charts" to track inherited characteristics. They also utilised "Self-Reflection Circles" to mathematically colour-code their daily habits and time management, while exploring Sanskrit forms for numbers and nature.
Class 7 celebrated evolving identities through "I am" posters and "The Story of my Name," exploring cultural lineage. They engaged in data-handling by creating pie charts of their daily routines and projected themselves onto the global stage through "Si j’étais à Paris," connecting foreign culture to their own personal experiences.
In Class 8, the focus turned to resilience. Students created "Adaptation Superpower" comic strips and "I Am Unique" advertisements to market their own talents. They compared their daily routines with peers using double bar graphs and explored "Ma journée à la française," adopting the French lifestyle for a day. The week ended with reflective diary entries inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of being the change they wish to see.
Class 9 engaged in high-level introspection by writing "Letters to their Future Selves" and autobiographies reflecting on their journeys so far. Through "Portfolio Visioning," they moved beyond grades to focus on "Statements of Purpose" for their adult lives. This was balanced with logical reflection as they mapped the "Number System" and set personal academic goals for the year ahead.
In Class 10, students sought inspiration in "Social Role Models," connecting personal values with broader societal figures. They explored the theme of identity through poetry writing and recitation, illustrating their works on A3 canvases. Mathematical concepts were turned into art through "Real Number Mandalas" and Rangolis representing HCF and LCM, while a cross-cultural study of French and Indian lifestyles helped them develop a mature global perspective.
The week-long voyage of self-discovery reached its horizon, leaving our young navigators astonished by the newfound depths of their own multi-faceted personalities. As the quest for self-discovery is a lifelong endeavour, we hope this experience serves as a compass for our students, guiding them towards many more such moments of profound self-realisation and self-actualisation in the years to come.
