Raksha bandhan celebrations in a special way
"Our brothers and sisters are there with us from the dawn of our personal stories to the inevitable -Susan Scarf Merrel
Rakshabandhan is the festival of bonds, love and togetherness. At The Indian School – Second Shift, we believe that the bond of protection should not be gender specific and as a symbol of our belief in gender equality, we encourage our children to tie a rakhi on siblings and dear friends irrespective of gender. It is not merely a silken thread but a tradition that binds forever.
To celebrate this festival of Rakshabandhan, the students of Pre School and Pre Primary made colourful handmade rakhis and tied to each other. They used decorative threads, star stickers, mirrors, pearls and flowers for making very creative rakhis. Ms. Neera Bhagat narrated a story to explain the significance of the festival, its occurrence on the calendar and the festivities associated with it.
Students of the Primary classes also celebrated the festival in a most endearing way by making cards and colourful rakhis. They pasted colourful cut outs on ribbons and decorated these with recycled material like pencil shavings, broken buttons etc. They also sang the most beautiful song ‘ Phoolon ka taaron ka sabka kehna hai, ek hazaaron mein meri behna hai’ which signifies the eternal love between siblings and friends.
Students participated in a rakhi making activity to hone their aesthetic skills and creativity. They enthusiastically showcased their innovativeness and thoroughly enjoyed the engagement even as nine winners were chosen across three sections for their creativity.
Students of the Middle School celebrated the occasion in the customary way at our Scholl, namely with the girls and boys tying rakhis to each other. The value of gender equality resonated loudly through the celebration.
The decoration and ambience of all the classes reflected the festival mood. Everybody must live in harmony and hence should know about the rich culture and traditions of India that makes our nation extraordinary. The values of love and protection was sensitively portrayed by all the students. Each one went home with a decorated wrist and sweets!
