Raksha Bandhan as a symbol of Gender Equality at School

On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, our school held a special assembly on 17th August 2024 to celebrate the bond of love and protection between siblings. The event was a vibrant mix of narration, song and performances, showcasing the talents and enthusiasm of our students.

While Raksha Bandhan traditionally focuses on the relationship between brothers and sisters, our celebration also emphasised the importance of gender equality. The festival was presented as an opportunity to foster mutual care, respect, and protection among all individuals, promoting the values of inclusion and unity.

The programme began with a heartfelt speech by the students of class 3, who eloquently shared the significance of Raksha Bandhan and how it strengthens the bond between siblings. They also discussed modern interpretations of the festival that promote equal respect and responsibility for both brothers and sisters.

Following the speech, a meaningful poem was recited, beautifully capturing the spirit of the occasion and the joy it brings to families. Next, the School choir presented a melodious song on the festival. This song perfectly aligned with the theme of love and protection, creating an atmosphere filled with warmth and affection.

A vibrant dance performance followed, reflecting the cultural diversity of our nation and the various ways in which Raksha Bandhan is celebrated across India.

After the performances, our teacher, Ms Rekha Kapoor narrated a story from the Mahabharata about Lord Krishna and Draupadi, highlighting the cultural significance of the festival in Indian tradition.

Headmistress, Ms Sanjeeta Roy then addressed the gathering, explaining the core values of love, respect and responsibility embodied by Raksha Bandhan. She also shared the historical tale of Queen Karnavati of Mewar, who sought the protection of Emperor Humayun by sending him a rakhi, illustrating the timeless message of solidarity and mutual support.

As a part of the day's activities, students crafted rakhis and the girls and the boys equally, tied these on the wrists of each other, encouraging them to reflect on values of gender equality and responsibility.

The assembly concluded with the singing of the School song, fostering a sense of unity and togetherness among all present.

Overall, the assembly was a meaningful tribute to the festival of Raksha Bandhan, leaving everyone with a deeper understanding of the values of equality, love and protection that it represents.
