Rabindra Jayanti Celebrations

“The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence.” – Rabindranath Tagore.

On May 09, 2022, the students of The Indian School-Second Shift celebrated Rabindra Jayanti to mark the birth anniversary of the great Bengali poet, scholar, novelist, playwright, humanist, philosopher, and Nobel laureate—Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. This year is the 161st birth anniversary. The day is also popularly called ‘Pochishe Boishakh’ since it is the 25th day of the Bengali month Boishakh.

Gurudev Rabindranath wanted a country where knowledge is accessible to all. The students of class 4 made collages with pictures from the life of the great poet and showcased his beliefs. They also named some of his poems and essays.

The Bengali polymath is the only one to have written the national anthems of two countries – India and Bangladesh. The students of class 5 created wall clock standees with his famous poem "Where the mind is without fear" as a background of the clock and also sketched his image with pencil and coloured pencils. They also drew a sketch of Tagore with a quotation from him.

In 1901, Tagore founded the experimental "Visva-Bharati University" in rural West Bengal at Shantiniketan (“Abode of Peace”), where he sought to blend the best of Indian and Western traditions. The students of class 6 wrote famous quotes in English and created wall hangings.

Between 1928 and 1940, Rabindranath painted more than 2000 images & played a role in transforming art into modernism. To showcase their creativity, the cover page of "Geetanjali" was drawn by the students of class 7.

To pay homage and respect to the great poet, a special assembly was arranged on 9 May in The Foundation Hall. The young girls of class 5, Suryanshi and Hitaishi, enlightened the audience with facts about the works of Rabindranath Tagore. Melodious students from classes 6 and 7 sang the classic “Purano Sei Diner Kotha '' song in a choir. Class 8 performers danced to the very popular song “Momo Chitte Niti Nritye, Ke Je Naache, Ta Ta Thoi Thoi Ta Ta Thoi Thoi '' mesmerising the audience.

The environment was ecstatic. The students enthusiastically presented songs, dance, paintings, crafts etc. It was a pleasure watching excited, energetic children during these activities.

The teachers made sincere efforts with students to make the celebrations successful. All in all, it was an enjoyable and memorable day.
