Classes 6-10 interact with a senior Meteorologist on Climate Change

An insightful session on “Climate Change: Insight into Weather and Environment” was held by The Indian School-Second Shift for classes 6 -10 on 21 August 2025.

The session was conducted by Mr Anand Sharma, Senior meteorologist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), currently serving as President of the Indian Meteorological Society.

In his address, Mr Sharma drew the students’ attention to the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on weather and the environment. He explained how atmospheric factors such as air pressure, wind speed, and the direction of cloud movements determine day-to-day weather conditions. He also elaborated on the nature of moisture in the air, the difference between hot and cold air in terms of density, and how these variations influence weather systems. The importance of Earth’s magnetic field in shielding the planet from harmful solar radiation was also touched upon.

He guided the audience on accessing reliable weather information through the official meteorological website of the Government of India, emphasising the importance of credible sources in understanding weather updates and forecasts.

Responding to students’ queries, Mr Sharma spoke at length about global warming, its influence on changing weather patterns, and the increasing frequency of extreme climatic events.

The session also included a lively interaction with the students, who asked questions about monsoon behavior, temperature variations, and environmental changes, all of which Mr Sharma answered with clarity.

The session proved to be highly engaging and informative, providing the young learners a rare opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge from one of the country’s most respected meteorologists. Mr Anand Sharma’s ability to simplify complex scientific ideas left a strong impression on the students and inspired them to take greater interest in environmental studies and the challenges posed by climate change.
