Peer Exchange Programme at the Ministry of Environment

At The Indian School-Second Shift we never let go of an opportunity to make the environment and community a cleaner place. On October 3, 2019, students attended a peer exchange programme organised by Chintan ( NGO) on the topic “ Waste Management”. It was conducted at the Ministry of Environment, Forests
and Climate Change. Dr. Amarnath Raju- Joint secretary MOEFCC was present .

The session was attended by Divyanshi Panwar of class 7, Arumay Salodia and Simaran of class 6, accompanied by Ms. Yahvi Seth. The programme aimed at discussing the various initiatives and actions taken by schools for waste management. The students were to share their journey, the initiatives, challenges faced and relevant steps to overcome the challenges.

The Foundationers proudly shared with the audience the steps taken at our School to manage waste well. The students spoke about the compost pit, rolley polley, single use plastic on campus, e-waste/plastic waste collection drives, shift from disposable plates and cutlery from the canteen, the covering of registers with newspaper or brown paper, carrying metal water bottles instead of plastic ones, ban on cling film at School and so on. They also spoke of initiatives like the separate bins’ plan and the Cleanliness drive – Yamuna Walk in the pipeline.

The audience asked questions like how we convinced students to carry empty lunch boxes for buying food in the canteen. Divyanshi shared text messages sent from School requesting parents to enable the same.

Also as a part of the programme, students were asked to carry a “best out of waste” model made at School. We built a stool using old shoes, trousers, jeans, pillow cover, used egg trays, sand and newspaper. Arumay shared how the stool was made and that it can hold upto 40 kilos of weight. The model was much liked by all and Mr. Raju applauded the students for the great idea.

At the end of the programme everyone shared how they felt and concluded with a pledge that each one will practise waste management. They promised do whatever it takes to save our planet by reducing the use of plastic. After all there is No Planet B, they reiterated.
