Observing National Reading Day- 18 June

In the words of Victor Hugo, “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”

In these trying times, reading comes as a healing potion to reconcile with our world and to allow us a measure of tenderness and grace with which to exist.

The Indian School-Second Shift organised a set of online and offline activities to observe National Reading Day on 18 June. An interactive online story reading session was planned for classes 4 and 5 by a parent and some senior students. The students of classes 6 to 8 actively participated in offline book cover- making for their favourite reads as well as enactments of their favourite characters.  

The online session with information regarding Sir P.N. Panicker and his contribution to the library movement. It was emphasised how reading becomes an effective tool to ingrain values and improve communication skills.

School organised two virtual sessions for the students of classes 4 and 5. Our guest speaker for class 4 was one of the members of our PTA body, Ms.Shivani Sharma, who shared the fable “Does it stink” from the book ‘It’s Story Time!’
   The enthused listeners were very attentive and the moral of the tale was specially absorbed. 

E-books, kindles and presentations played an eminent role in yet another session where Dhairya Saran, class VIII A, introduced his younger peers of class 5 to Charles Dickens’ –
‘ A Christmas Carol’. He effectively dramatised his reading with expressions and voice modulation. To keep the students engrossed, a short quiz was also held, where class 5A excelled with their prompt answers!

A vote of thanks was accorded by the coordinating teachers to both the speakers of the day as the students offered a robust round of applause. It was a valuable session as the young learners carried back new learning even as they reluctantly said goodbye.
