Math Week 18-22 December

“Mathematics is the knowledge with which God has written the Universe.” Galileo

The importance of mathematics has never been greater than now and for the foreseeable future. The celebration of ‘Mathematics Week’ had a distinct flavour at The Indian School-Second Shift from 18 to 22 December 2023. The students of classes I to IX came together, showcasing diverse activities and competitions in numeracy, especially designed for their each level.

The following interesting activities were performed by students, displaying spirited enthusiasm, absorbing information and enjoying the stimulating exercise of the mind.

CLASS I: Students participated in an array of activities. To begin with, the students sequenced ‘Months in a Year cards’ in the correct order and sang the song ‘Twelve Months in a Year'. They did an activity on even and odd numbers, and addition and subtraction on the cut out of a snowman. They had fun solving the shape riddles on the class smart board.

CLASS II: Students did a ‘Clock Activity’ wherein they learnt about the working of the minute hand and the hour hand. They also did an activity on the Days of the Week and learnt to write the names of the days in sequence. A quiz on mental math was held. An activity on money transactions, where children learnt to buy and sell, was conducted effectively. A multiplication activity was also done to improve cognitive skills.

CLASS III: Students presented the multiplication tables on a multiplication flower. They also made robots using recycled material in various shapes. Some students narrated stories to their peers, based on the concept of division.

CLASSES IV and V: Students played the game 'Figure Me Out', in which they solved questions relating to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They enjoyed a

solving riddles related to mathematical operations and guessing the time. They also drew a sketch of Srinivasa Ramanujan and discussed his contribution to the field of mathematics.

CLASSES VI-IX: The students wrote short biographies of the various Indian mathematicians. They also made a Christmas Factor Tree and a Christmas Multiple Tree, calculated thearea and perimeter of robots made of recycled items. They worked out the exponents wheel, and practised mental mat through faster methodologies.

The week culminated with a series of flip classrooms conducted by the senior students in the junior classes. The topics covered during the sessions were quick calculations through vedic mathematical tricks, understanding and representation of data on a pictograph, optical illusion in the context of mathematics, etc. The students enjoyed presenting and learning many interesting concepts from their peers.

The celebration encouraged young learners to get involved, to dispel math anxiety and create a love for the subject. To perceive the connection of mathematical concepts with real life situations, besides the former were the primary objectives of Mathematics Week. The resounding success of the celebrations is the outcome of tireless efforts put in by the resource team comprising of students and the Math faculty.
