International Labour Day awareness drive

“Without labour, nothing prospers” – Sophocles

International Labour Day is a day to celebrate the hard work and contribution of workers around the world. Globally, it is observed on May 1st every year and is also popularly known as May Day. The day is dedicated to workers and labour movements around the world, and it has its roots in the struggle for worker rights.

The first International Labour Day was celebrated in 1890, after the Second International, a coalition of socialist and labour parties, called for a worldwide demonstration in support of the eight-hour workday. Since then, May Day has become an important day for worker rights. This day is observed in more than 80 countries around the world.

It originated in the late 19th century as a way to commemorate the Haymarket Affair, which was a labour demonstration in Chicago in 1886 that turned violent.

Millions of people around the world rejoice on the occasion to honour workers and to call for improved working conditions, renew the call for fair wages, safe working conditions, etc.

The students of classes 6 to 9 of The Indian School – Second Shift used their artistic skills to create gratitude cards, posters and badges for their dear 'didis' and 'bhaiyas'.

Students of class 8 showed their gratitude by distributing bottles of juice to make our helpers feel cool in this scorching month of May.

Students of class 9 sensitised themselves by writing articles on the origin and significance of this day. They also spoke to the helpers at school about their well being. All the students thanked them to let them know that their hard work and dedication is valued and honoured.

Overall, May Day was celebrated with much enthusiasm at School, which also inculcated social responsibility in our student community and paved the way to make a positive difference in our macro society.
