The International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, was first observed by UNESCO and UN-Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aimed to promote women and girls in science. This day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO, and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace.
Fourth-grade students read STEM narratives on well-known female role models. They also took part in the intra class quiz about the same.
To commemorate the occasion, the students of class 5 made a collage of a woman in an open portrait and held a classroom discussion about the occasion.
Class 6 students participated in a group activity where they were divided into six groups, and each group researched and presented on one female scientist each. The students were able to see presentations about the lives and accomplishments of Rosalind Franklin, Marie Curie etc.
Class VII students participated in a quiz to understand the importance of women in science . It enhanced their knowledge about the achievements by women in the field of science.
The students of class VIII wrote articles on why the occasion is celebrated and about the one woman who has inspired them. It made them work on their creative writing skills.
The spread of awareness of women’s rights is greatly aided by celebrating this day. The occasion serves as a reminder of how important it is to encourage women and girls in science and about their equality in every walk of life.
