International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking activities
“If you can quit for a day, you can quit for a lifetime”-Benjamin Alire Saenz
Substance abuse and the illicit trafficking of drugs are a great evil in our society and disorientation among a majority of the youth. Drug trafficking is an industry generally working on a vicious cycle of manufactured demand and then supply. In view of the growing menace and the deterioration in the quality of life the General Assembly at the United Nations, in December 1987 designated 26th June as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The day is observed worldwide with consciousness fervour to make people aware of the hazards of drug addiction and illegal trafficking. It is poison to the well-being of the youth and in particular, poses as a barrier problem to the socio-economic and political stability of a nation.
Class 6 commemorated the occasion by making posters on the theme “Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”.
Class 7 made posters on the theme of saying no to drugs and learning more about how fatal these can be if not stopped.
Class 8 and 9 demonstrated creativity through informative posters. They were also shown videos and ted talks on drug awareness.
Measures taken to eliminate the challenge are critical, because drug use, at its core, is a health issue. Drug dependence is a disease, not a crime. The real criminals are the drug traffickers. But the supply side is only half the problem. Unless we reduce the demand for illicit drugs, we can never fully tackle their cultivation, production or trafficking.
We can succeed if we reinforce our commitment to the basic principles of health and human rights, shared responsibility, a balanced approach to reducing supply and demand, and universal access to prevention, treatment and support. This will foster communities free of drug-related crime and violence and.individuals free of drug dependence who can contribute to our shared future and a safer world for all.
