Human Rights Day activities

“It is absolutely clear that we need to regain the universality of human rights, the indivisibility of human rights, and we need to find a new energy that motivates young people around the world.”

Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. This is the day when the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The occasion was celebrated by The Indian School- Second shift to educate the children about the significance of human rights. Students of classes 6 to 9 participated in diverse activities to observe the day.

Class 6 had an interactive session with their Social Science teacher, wherein they were introduced to the concept of human rights and their significance for human society. The children had queries which were patiently answered.

For class 7, a poster-making activity was held in which students designed creative and informative posters, with slogans on human rights.

Class 8 held a debate on the topic ' Denial of human rights is a challenge to humanity’. The class was divided into two groups, one of which spoke in favour of the motion, and the other, against the motion.

A quiz  was held for class 9, where one student volunteered to be quiz master and posed questions to four teams. The questions were all related to human rights.

The activities on Human Rights Day encouraged the students to creatively showcase their knowledge and awareness about the day and its significance. It was also an initiative by the teachers to create sensitivity about human rights as well as about the responsibilities that come with such rights.
