Bomala Golu

The Indian School-Second Shift, presented another spectacular display, of artistic expression with the Bomala Golu, a unique regional festival from the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, co-relating with the School theme this year The East Coast of India. The presentation was showcased on 15th October, 2018 by the children of classes I, II and III, with a collection of folk songs and dances. Our School believes in the diversity of India and this amply represented that spirit.

There was on display of colourful eco-friendly dolls tastefully arranged on the ritual 5 steps. And to contrast this, on stage was the live Gollu of students frozen in their frames, which came alive by turn!

The programme had all the elements of a blockbuster-dance, music and drama with a delightful entwining story of the legendary Telugu Poet, Tenali Rama, one of the 8 poets in the court of Emperor Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagar, lost in the forest while out on his travels.

Tenali stumbles upon a temple under a magic spell. Lo and behold then! Dolls, symbolic of the culture and legends from different parts of India, when reached out to and touched...suddenly came alive!

The children of classes 1 and 2 attired in the costume of the region, presented the mystic Sufi Baul dance from Bengal, the Dandiya Raas from Gujarat, Kavadi Attam from Tamilnadu, the Bhangra from the Punjab and a vibrant Goan dance. This was interspersed with folk songs from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha and Haryana. A live choir of the same classes beautifully sang the multifarious songs in varying rhythms, intonations and languages! What an outstanding specimen of plurality.

Finally, a grand finale summed up the code of our School the Sanskaara Syllabus. This was woven with the Sustainable Development Goals which School has adopted.

The programme ended with Advisor, Ms. Susan Thomas announcing the winners of the Citizenship Essay Writing competition- Mehr Sagoi of Class 7, Dhairya Saran of Class 6 and Mehul Makhija of Class 4. Appreciation certificates were awarded to Ms. Neeti Gupta, the Citizenship in Charge and Rhea Grover of class 6 who made a marked contribution to the Citizenship Programme, which aims at empowering young citizens with life skills, and their ability to make a difference to society.
