Gandhi Jayanti celebrations across the classes

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever”. -Mahatma Gandhi

The students of The Indian School-Second Shift celebrated Gandhi Jayanti on 1st October 2021.

The Pre School and the Pre Primary children spoke lines depicting the life of the great leader who lived on the principles of truth and non-violence.

The children were told a story from Gandhiji’s childhood. They also performed a dance to the popular song “Bande mein tha dum Vande Mataram”. 

Students dressed as Bapu in khadi dhotis spoke a few lines each on the values and austerity practised by Gandhiji. They sang “Dum Dum Dum Gandhi Jayanti has come” and Gandhiji ke Bandar Teen” followed by Bapu’s favourite bhajan, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram”. 

Not only this, the children were shown  photographs of important episodes from Bapu's life, his spectacles, his walking stick and the charkha. The story of ‘The Three Wise Monkeys’ was narrated to the children with the help of pictures. The children showed their artistic side with craft of Gandhiji’s spectacles and the three wise monkeys.

The students of class 1 celebrated the occasion with charkha craft using recycled wool and ice-cream sticks. An online special assembly was conducted where students spoke about the teachings of the Mahatma. The class 2 children shared stories from Gandhiji's life through PPTs and videos. The values of Gandhiji were discussed in detail with several examples from his life.

The children of classes 3 and 4 performed a special activity – “ Expression of Love”. They were told about Gandhiji’s autobiography, “My Experiments with Truth”. Later they showcased how they  hope to emulate him and grow up to be conpassionate citizens.

The students of classes 5 to 8 were shown videos and clippings from Gandhiji’s life. They were familiarised with the famous teachings of Gandhiji like ahimsa, equality, austerity and others.  They showcased their creativity with sketches of Bapu.  

The day ended with a special thought that was very dear to Gandhiji-' Cleanliness is next to Godliness and service to mankind is the first step towards reaching it.'

The event concluded with Gandhiji’s solemn last words “Hey Ram” symbolic of the immortality of him and his beliefs which have continue to resonate across the world.
