Exchange with peers in Vietnam for class 5B on National Reading Day
In the words of Victor Hugo, “To learn to read is to light a fire, every syllable that is spelt out is a spark.”
The afternoon of 19 June 2021 turned out to be an extremely fascinating and enlightening experience for class 5B. The occasion was National Reading Day and an interaction was arranged with Ms Anh Duong Nguyen and her class in Ninh Bing, Vietnam.
The session was conducted via Google Meet. The peers broke the ice by introducing each other and their countries. They then chatted about favourite books. Some of the titles discussed were “Pollyanna” by E.H. Potter, “The Dance of Star Fairies” by Thea Stilton, “The Complete Novels of Sherlock Holmes” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, “The Diary of Wimpy Kids” by Jeff Kinney and others. They shared reviews of authors around the world.
The peers discussed the importance of reading, especially during Covid times. They shared various book related activities that are done in class like bookmark making, summary writing, character sketch, reading with family etc.
Teacher, Ms. Kanika Batheja then did an interactive story-telling session for the groups. She chose the popular short story, “Three Questions” by Leo Tolstoy and used a captivating Power Point presentation to bring the story alive. The narration was followed by an exchange of ideas where the students discussed their learning of the story.
The session helped strengthen listening, speaking and observation skills. It was an enriching experience for the students. They promised each other to foster amity and friendship, to overcome cultural barriers and learn more about each other.
