Environment Week 2024

“Let’s nurture the nature so that we can have a better future.”

The Indian School – Second Shift observed  Environment Week from 1st to 6th July 2024 with an enthusiastic and active participation of students. The School theme for this year, “I am the Change I Want to See”, encapsulates the powerful idea that personal transformation is the driving force of a luminous and more compassionate world.

The week commenced with an aim to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our classrooms and surroundings clean, conserving energy, reducing paper usage, recycling materials and understanding the profound impact of climate change in our lives. A wide range of activities were organised classwise to instill a sense of responsibility among students towards environmental conservation and to address the challenges posed by the climate crisis.

In Pre School, the children were told a story about nature. They made newspaper bags in a tearing and pasting activity on the theme ‘recycle’. The Pre Primary students were sensitised about the environment and its importance. Rhymes related to the environment were taught and the story of "The Giving Tree" was narrated by the teachers using props. The children also crafted creative pots from recycled bottles.

Class 1 celebrated the week by participating in various activities. They created crafts from waste and recycled material. A song on the 3R’s was learnt and thoroughly enjoyed by the students. They listened to stories narrated by their teachers and made a collage with leaf prints. They also did a sorting activity, separating wet and dry waste.

During the week, the students of classes 2 and 3 crafted beautiful piggy banks using recycled material like old plastic bottles and used decorative paper. This helped them implement the knowledge of the 3 R's namely Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The students of classes 4 and 5 actively participated in a variety of environmental activities. The students focused on the significance of plants and their contribution to our lives. They made projects highlighting the different types of plants and wrote catchy slogans promoting environmental protection and the importance of preserving nature. They made eco-friendly plastic bags and pasted pistachio shells on these. The children made wall hangings using reusable materials such as cardboard, CD's, beads etc. in an impressive show of creativity.

The students of classes 6 and 7 listened to a story that depicted the impact of pollution on river water and its consequences on people's lives. The students aimed to convey

the urgent need for immediate action and raise awareness about the importance of environmental preservation. They painted T-shirts and cloth bags to spread awareness about the environment.

The students also participated in a plantation drive. A special assembly was held in which students presented a Nukkad Natak whose title was 'Abhirakhsanam'. In the skit, the students talked about human nature and the selfish attitude of humans who do not want to spare a thought about the aspects of nature like rivers, plants and earth. After the Nukkad Natak followed a talk on Environment and this enlightened the students to make our habitat a safe and better place to live.

The students of classes 8 and 9 engaged in creative and eco-friendly activities. They crafted paper bags from old newspapers, promoting recycling. Additionally, they reused plastic bottles as plant holders, encouraging upcycling. These activities aimed to teach students the importance of reducing waste and caring for the environment. They were shown a video which effectively conveyed the urgency of addressing climate change. They also discussed how online food delivery contributes to environmental degradation and encouraged students to reduce their reliance on such services.

The week concluded with a message highlighting the importance of individual efforts in saving our earth. Students were motivated to take responsibility for their actions and make conscious choices that contribute to environmental sustainability.

Overall, Environment Week at The Indian School – Second Shift was a resounding success, with students actively participating in a wide range of activities. The events not only raised awareness about environmental issues but also inspired students to take action and become responsible stewards of the environment. Through their creativity, enthusiasm and dedication, the students showcased their commitment to sustainable practices and laying the foundation of a greener future.
