Educational Excursion to the National War Memorial for Middle School
An afternoon at the National War Memorial turned history lessons into a heartfelt experience of pride, gratitude and responsibility.
The students of classes 6 to 9 of The Indian School-Second Shift went on an educational excursion to the National War Memorial on 6 February 2026, accompanied by their class teachers. The visit was organised to introduce the young students to the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers and to connect classroom learning with real-life experiences.
Students assembled at School where their teachers briefed them about the purpose of the visit and safety guidelines. The group then departed by bus and reached the National War Memorial in great enthusiasm. The calm and dignified atmosphere of the memorial left a lasting impression on the students.
During the visit, students learnt in detail about the structure and significance of the National War Memorial. They were also informed about the rainwater harvesting system incorporated into the design of the memorial, which highlighted the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Through detailed explanations, students delved deep into the understanding of the sacrifices made by soldiers after Independence, gaining insight into the various conflicts and operations undertaken by the Indian Armed Forces.
The students also observed the bronze murals displayed at the memorial, which vividly depict the major wars and military operations fought by India after Independence. These murals portray scenes of courage, strategy, and sacrifice, bringing to life the challenges faced by Indian soldiers on land, sea, and air. The murals helped students gain a deeper understanding of the realities of war and the bravery of the armed forces, leaving them deeply moved and inspired.
For class 7, the excursion held special relevance, as they had studied a related chapter in their English curriculum. The real-life experience helped them better comprehend the themes of patriotism, courage, and sacrifice discussed in the lesson, making classroom learning more meaningful.
The students observed the names of fallen heroes engraved on the walls and maintained silence as a mark of respect. Many students expressed feelings of pride and gratitude towards the soldiers and reflected on the importance of peace, unity, and national service.
After the visit, students participated in a reflection and discussion session. The excursion concluded with a group photograph, and the students returned to School safely in the evening.
Overall, the visit to the National War Memorial was an enriching and inspiring experience. It not only enhanced the students’ historical and environmental awareness but also instilled in them a deep sense of patriotism and respect for the nation’s heroes.
