Earth Day celebration across the classes

On 22 April, 2024, the students of The Indian School-Second Shift joined millions around the globe to observe Earth Day, an occasion dedicated to environmental awareness and activism and to honour our Mother Planet. The activities conducted across the various class levels showcased School's commitment to sustainability and environmental education.

In classes 1 to 5, informative sessions were conducted by the Environmental Science teachers for the students in each class, on topics such as recycling, composting, and sustainable gardening. These sessions were aimed at providing practical knowledge about how students can contribute to environmental conservation. Students were made aware about the alarming rate of depleting natural resources and the rising levels of pollution. Various types of pollutants and pollution were also discussed in the class. Students announced, post the discussion, that 'we are the ones who have to initiate the changes by first changing our own ways of life. We can all  make amendments in the condition of the environment by changing our daily habits'.

The students also engaged in art and craft activities, using recycled materials to create artworks that reflected their commitment to preserving nature. These artworks were later displayed at the School reception. This activity highlighted the impact of litter on our environment and the importance of one's sense of discretion and responsibility for maintaining cleanliness. The children also made posters using recycled materials to spread awareness about the environment and shared the message of sustainable development to save Mother Earth.

The students of class 5  took a proactive step towards raising awareness about environmental conservation by crafting a detailed model of Earth. The project aimed to highlight the importance of preserving our planet's delicate ecosystem and fostering sustainable practices.

The students of classes 6 to 9 attended a special assembly organised on Earth Day in the School auditorium, where  Headmistress, Ms Sheeja Menon, highlighted the importance of Earth Day and the School’s ongoing environmental initiatives.

Following Ms Menon's words of wisdom, a few of our young environmentalists were invited to speak to their fellow peers about global warming, its effects, and how they can play a role in combating climate change. Paying tribute to  Mother Earth, the students of classes 7 and 8 presented a dance. A kit was presented by the students of classes 8 and 9, titled ‘Badlav ki Ore’.

The celebration of Earth Day was not just a day-long event but a reinforcement of our everyday commitment to the environment. The activities were designed not only to educate but also to inspire students to become proactive guardians of our planet. The enthusiastic participation of both students and staff underscored the collective spirit of environmental stewardship.

School pledged to continue its green initiatives, including monthly cleanliness drives and an annual environmental week, to keep the momentum of this significant day alive throug the year.
