Diwali Milan 2016

From darkness to the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity; lights illuminate every corner of India during Diwali and the scent of incense sticks hang in the air, mingled with colorful rangolis, joy, togetherness and hope.

The celebration of Diwali ,'The festival of lights' came alive at The Indian School-Second Shift, on 28th October, when the whole School wore a festive look with diyas and lanterns adorning the corridors and the assembly hall in bright colours. The day started by making colorful rangolis using flower petals and leaves by the Pre-School and Pre-Primary classes. The beautiful creations of our little ones added the perfect setting to the festivity.

True Diwali spirit means sharing our things with the less fortunate, who do not have the means to celebrate this festival. Under our Citizenship Programme, we took an initiative to stimulate awareness about the rights and responsibilities of students as the future citizens of this country. On this auspicious occasion , we invited some delightful children from Palna Shishu Kendra, Dakshinpuri. The day was planned to treat our little guests with joy, love and of course a grand Diwali celebration.

Our little toddlers welcomed their guests with a traditional tikka and escorted them to the auditorium for the programme, which started with melodious songs sung by the students of class 1. They warmly greeted the children, setting the tone for the event. Next, was an foot tapping performance by the Pre- Schoolers and Pre Primary students as they matched steps to the beats of Mere tumahare sab ke liye, Happy Diwali.

Students of class 4 presented a nukkad natak to spread the message of the need to celebrate a cracker-free Diwali. They also entreated everyone to use earthen diyas to promote once more indigenous poducts. The assembly concluded with a poem by Harshita Khurana of 3A in which she described the joy and excitement that the festival of Diwali brings.

The next session was a Diya painting workshop. The facilitators were the teachers along with our PTA members. Class 1 students along with children from the Palna Shishu Kendra learnt to paint and decorate diyas, which they carried home as a gift to their families.

After the celebration, it was time for some appetising food. The students of class 4 promptly put up bhelpuri and gulab jamun counters followed by beverages. The children enjoyed each moment and shared their feelings with open hearts. The guests were thanked for making the day even more special and were given goodie bags with chocolates made by the teachers under the Citizenship programme.

Diwali is a time to turn inward and light the lamps of knowledge and truth in our hearts and minds so that we can dispel the forces of darkness and ignorance within us and allow our innate brilliance and goodness to shine. It is a time to discover how we can be more loving, kind and respectful towards ourselves and others. And since all wealth, be it material or spiritual, should be shared with others who are less fortunate, Diwali is also a time to reflect on the various ways we can assist others and light up the lives of those around us.
