Classes 6 to 10 celebrate Self Discovery Week

The Indian School- Second Shift believes that students should be encouraged to identify inherent inclinations early and hence, the session 2024-25 commenced with the customary Self-Discovery Week. This is a part of the School tradition and aims to make the children more aware about themselves with each passing year, in order to help them develop reflect introspect and explore their areas of interest.

The students of class 6 engaged in a multifaceted exploration of their academic faculties during Self Discovery Week. They crafted a collage, each piece, a unique interpretation of the essence of their social knowledge, reflecting their individual perceptions and insights. They engaged in introspection, identifying five detrimental habits, a crucial step towards personal growth in the coming year, and presented them confidently in class. In an Art- integrated Math activity, the children constructed bar graphs, meticulously analyzing their daily routines, to optimise time management, a skill invaluable for their academic journey. Finally, they delved into the realm of science, creating vibrant posters celebrating its omnipresence in everyday life, nurturing a deeper appreciation of the subject.

In class 7, students created beautiful Warli art, depicting their families celebrating festivities together. They had an interactive session where they described an incident from their lives which has made them learn the value of empathy. In their journey of discovering themselves, they wrote an essay and presented in class their version of a healthy lifestyle. To inculcate in the young minds the Indian value of "Atithi devo bhava",  the students were asked to write an essay on the initiative they would take if they were tourist guides for foreign guests to their city. To trace their daily routine and track their time, the students also made a bar graph showcasing how they spend their hours in a day.

Class 8 began the week with self reflection where they were to narrate in class an incident of their lives which they never wish to relive and explain why. The objective was to enhance their reflective awareness and encourage them to work upon themselves. Diving into the realms of science fiction, the enthusiastic students created fictional characters inspired by the novel ‘Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus’. They were also given an imaginary situation where they were to assume supreme authority for a day, and had the choice to make changes in India. They were to list three changes that they would want to bring in the constitution of India and explain why. The children wrote interesting essays on their vision for the country, and were simultaneously made to understand the theme of the year, ‘I am the Change I want to See’.

The National Education Policy has brought about significant changes in the education system in India, and each student of class 9 read up the latest modifications in the NEP and selected a feature that they appreciated the most. They then, wrote an essay on why the particular modification was necessary and how students would benefit from it. They also gave a presentation explaining their responsibilities and duties as students and how honestly they are performing them. These activities gave the students and opportunity to reflect and introspect as students.

The students of class 10 wrote an essay on their model mathematician or scientist, who is an inspiration for them. This helped them understand the qualities they appreciate and why are they inclined towards certain areas of learning. They expressed how their interests in Math and Science are inspired and guided by the discoveries and inventions of personalities they look up to.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." In the light of this, the students made a diary entry, sharing their feelings about any one change that they would want in their lives and why.

The week long celebration of the students’ journey to discover themselves concluded with their development of intrapersonal, interpersonal, cognitive, emotional and social skills.
