Class 9 visits the Police Station
The National Implementation Committee (NIC) under the chairmanship of Hon'ble Union Home and Cooperation Minister has approved nine new themes, on which campaigns and events are to be based during the remaining period of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', ie., till August 2023. The committee inter-alia approved the theme 'Unity' as one of the nine themes.
It was prescribed by the Ministry of Home Affairs that an initiative called “Know your Police: Jane 8 Peher Ke Prehari Ka” is to be taken up across the country. Under this, a visit to the police station at Defence Colony was organised for the students of class 9, to familiarise them with the operations at a police station including the responsibilities and duties od police personnel.
At the venue, thd students interacted with SHO Chandra Shekhar. He welcomed the young visitors and led them on an interesting exploration. First, they were introduced to the reporting room, where citizens report their grievances and file an FIR. A detailed explanation was given by the SHO, elucidating the reality of legal proceedings, which is far from our imaginations!
Next, the children saw the reader room, where the paperwork of the police station is done, followed by the interrogation room, which was adjacent to it. The record room was the next halt, where the pupils were told that the room holds records of crimes and FIRs since 1959! The students got to know an interesting fact that perhaps the initial records were written in Urdu, and are still preserved there.
Then they visited the Malkhana, which was the storehouse of the arms and ammunition. The SHO showed the students guns, pistols and protection jackets, which greatly excited the students. Traditionally, Malkhanas, or evidence rooms, in police stations were filled with physical files, documents and seized materials. Students were also allowed to walk through the passage along the lockups, where, they were informed, that a law breaker could be kept only for 24 hours.
The visit concluded with an interactive session with the SHO and other officials who shared several important points with the children regarding some common crimes against young citizens. An engaging discussion took place, where the queries of the visitors were patiently answered by the host officers. The chief shared valuable pieces of advice alongwith real life examples, for the young generation, including how it is important to apply one's presence of mind and stay calm in the event of an emergency.
The children had an enriching experience and the visit greatly enhanced their knowledge. The students presented a poster which they had made to the police officials and got a picture taken with them to capture this unique memory. They thanked the officers for their tireless efforts.
