Class 3 visits the National Rail Museum
“Learning should be full of excitement. It is life’s greatest adventure; it is an illustrated excursion into the minds of the learned.”
On 19th February 2025, the students of class III visited the National Rail Museum in Chanakyapuri. The museum is home to specimens of the rail heritage of India. The objective of this visit was to introduce the children to the various aspects of transportation, types of wheels, and the evolution of the rail transport system. They also viewed 100 life-size exhibits of models of trains used over the generations by the Indian Railways.
The children were curious and excited during the visit. They enjoyed their way to the museum. The students were amazed to see the extensive outdoor gallery with its variety of steam, diesel, and electric locomotives along with a fascinating collection of royal saloons, wagons, carriages, armoured trains, rail cars, and a turntable. The indoor gallery equally enthralled the students. They got an opportunity to view a display of remarkable stories related to early modes of transportation. They also witnessed some remarkable collections of historical photographs, documents, railway artefacts, static exhibits, and antiquated items.
The major attraction of the museum was a Joy Train which runs along the perimeter of the museum and offers little riders a glance at the various live locomotives on display. The students enjoyed the train ride around the museum.
The visit proved to be an example of experiential learning. On reaching School, the students undertook a post-trip activity. They were asked to draw and colour what they perceived as the most attractive thing they saw there. They also wrote a few sentences on what they learned durng the visit.
The excursion offered rich resources for supplementing classroom learning.
