Annual Sports Day 2023

“One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than a hundred teaching it."

-Knute Rockne

Sports represent a vibrant celebration of athleticism, teamwork and unconstrained enthusiasm, and foster a sense of camaraderie, where participants have the opportunity to forge bonds that nurture their interpersonal skills. To celebrate human potential, unity and the sheer joy of pushing one’s limits, The Indian School and The Indian School- Second Shift held Sports Day 2023 at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex, on 30 December 2023.

The proceedings of this spirited day commenced with the arrival of the esteemed chief guest, Ms Meenakshi Lekhi, Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture. She was warmly welcomed by Principal, Ms. Tania Joshi.

This was followed by Ms Lekhi's address to the august gathering, where she highlighted the vital role of sports and physical exercise in maintaining one’s physical and mental health, and thereby in the development of the country. She also emphasised on the need to give equal importance to sports, along with academics, for the holistic development of the child.

An enthralling performance by the talented students of the School choir marked the opening of the mega event. The extravaganza then moved towards a variety of races and gracious dance performances by the students. The students of The Indian School-Second Shift performed the BIHU, the indigenous folk dance of Assam, which involves rapid hand movements, is a great cardiovascular workout, and also carries great aesthetic appeal. The dance stirred immense delight in the hearts of everyone present, including the parents seated in the audience.

Apart from the folk dances, the young athletes of Pre primary to class 2 participated in thd 50 metres flat race, and the students of classes 3-9 participated in the 100 metres sprint. The display of these athletic events presented the students in action on the tracks, showcasing their full enthusiasm and stamina. The races were followed by a prize distribution, where the winners were awarded with medals and certificates.

Next up, was the most highly anticipated, and immensely invested event, the grand finale, where the students of both Schools stood in a formation depicting the 7 continents of the globe in a confluence, signifying the diverse culture and tradition while still being united. The mesmerizing display compelled the audience to stand and applaud the sincere efforts of the students.

The zealous parents, gathered in large numbers, constantly encouraged and applauded the enthusiastic young sports stars. The event consciously laid emphasis on the significance of sports in a child’s life, and its contribution in physical and mental development.

Concluding the day, the Principal thanked all the teachers for their cooperation and support and advised children to keep up their sporting spirit. She extended her greetings to the guests and congratulated the participants on their enthusiastic display of talent and days of hard work. Additionally, students were appreciated for their sense of competition, instilled in them  and encouraged them to pursue their goals with similar diligence and perseverance. The day ended on a high note and a motivation urging them to keep trying. It was certainly a day filled with sportsmanship, enthusiasm and memories to cherish.
