Teacher workshop on International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking
AIIMS – NDDTC Delhi organised an online programme on 25 June 2021 to make people aware of substance abuse which is a great concern of our society and as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation, to achieve the goal of a society free of substance abuse. The Director of the Education Department was invited as the key speaker at the programme. The session was attended by teachers of various schools. The session included three meaningful videos showing how to intervene and assist if students are involved in substance use.
Schools are an important platform where intervention can prevent a long term negative outcome. As part of the project, some standard operative procedures have been developed to tackle the problem.
Schools and teachers play an important part by creating a supportive and nurturing environment for students as the child interacts with the teachers regularly. Hence, it can be identified if the student is showing symptoms like mood changes, worsening grades, decreased involvement in relationships with peers or a change in personal hygiene or appearance. Teachers are also a strong link between the student and the counsellor. The students who are found taking substances are examined and appropriate sessions are taken by counsellors.
A flexible approach must be used to motivate the child to break out of the habit of substance use and understand the related issues and their negative impact both at school and home. A supportive environment, constant monitoring and support from parents and school will assure that a relapse is avoided.
