Teacher webinar on Humour as a Teaching Tool
“People with a good sense of humour have a better sense of life”
On 21 December 2021, the teachers of The Indian School-Second Shift attended a webinar by Ms Rakhi Mathur, educator and Principal of Aniket English Medium School, Pune, on the topic ‘ Humour as a teaching tool’.
The webinar began with the benefits of adopting a light, playful mindset that helps establish a warm learning environment in the classroom. The speaker stated that happy teachers are able to create a happy classroom. It is an effective tool to improve the learning environment. It develops a positive attitude of students towards their studies and help develop a strong bond between the teacher and the students and helps increase creativity, divergent thinking and performance.
She emphasised that every teacher can energise the class by integrating humour with by funny anecdotes. These lighten the mood and encourage an active participation of the students by ensuring that learning is not confined to memory but is understood, analysed and applied in real situations.
Ms Mathur suggested strategies like riddles, tongue twisters, comic strips etc. which can be adopted by teachers within the classroom. To promote learning in an interesting way, NCERT has developed several graphic comic books where emphasis is placed on critical thinking, digital literacy and problem solving instead of rote learning.
The session was an enriching experience with several interesting and innovative takeaways.
