Storytelling on Skype with a Russian teacher for class 1B
“We are all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories. There isn’t a stronger connection between people than storytelling.”
The students of class 1 B had an opportunity to interact with Ms Nadezhda Ivanova, an English teacher at the Secondary School No.5 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, and MIE expert, on 24 December, 2020.
Ms Ivanova narrated Repka-The Enormous Turnip, a Russian tale, which is about a family which tried to pull out a giant turnip from under the ground. Using a captivating power point presentation, she brought the story alive for the students. Her storytelling skills demonstrated that storytelling is a shared experience in which the audience is just as active a participant as the storyteller.
The session was followed by a short interaction where the students were asked to solve a crossword puzzle relating to the folktale. Ms Ivanova was extremely impressed with the lively and intelligent young learners, as they answered all the questions with confidence!
Ms Ivanova concluded the session with a short presentation on common words and phrases used in Russian, demonstrating how to pronounce these correctly. The Foundationers translated the words into Hindi.
The session was an overwhelming experience which seemed to have worked its magic on the young learners. The children loved the session and actively interacted with Ms Ivanova.
