Science Week

Science is everywhere. Whether natural or human-derived, every aspect of a student’s life is filled with science.

The Indian School-Second Shift conducted week-long webinars observing Science Week from 23rd to 27th August, 2021. The objective was to inculcate scientific attitude and recreate interest in science. Various webinars were organised at School for the students.

Sustainability means making choices today that will positively impact the planet tomorrow. As a part of Science Week, Ms Rekha Lalla, expert on Climate Change and Sustainability, was invited to speak about sustainable living on August 23 2021, for the students of classes 3-5. Ms Rekha explained how sustainable living is achieved by making choices aimed to reduce individual and collective waste in the environment. While she gave examples of sustainable living by stopping the use of plastics, students joined the conversation by providing their inputs. Ways of reducing household energy use and the utilisation of renewable energy were also discussed.

Students learnt how one can find creative ways of reusing everything with an emphasis on eating locally to practice sustainable living.

On 24 August, the students of classes 6 to 8 had an interactive webinar with Ms Malshree Kalla, co-founder of Ignited Mindz.  She elaborated on INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY/ ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. Students had a wonderful experience gaining new knowledge.

The session was filled with questions and innovative ways to reduce pollution. The students enjoyed being introduced to new technologies available globally as they came up with new, innovative ideas for checking pollution and other contemporary concerns. Students learnt about hydroponics, drones, pill cams, etc. Enlightened with nanotechnology in medical and pollution fields they participated in mind-boggling challenges. This webinar helped the students think 'out of the box', as it were. The session ended with Ms Malshree Kalla declaring “ We need to innovate for the future.”

Following in the same spirit, Mr Nitin Gambhir was invited on 27th August to conduct a webinar on Robotics for class 5. Mr Gambhir is a noted alumnus of the Delhi College of Engineering with over 16 years of experience in the field of Robotics and Mechanisms. Mr. Gambhir has worked with Samsung and Akzo Nobel. The impactful and diverse
knowledge shared by him with the students in an interactive session left the students in awe of him.

Everyone was fascinated to see young minds learning together in a spirit of enquiry. The event not only helped students revise the concepts taught earlier but also gave them a platform to develop their fine motor, social, cognitive and linguistic skills. All participants gained an understanding of the cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of the tasks.

The activities were specific examples of science in our lives as evidence of scientific thought, method and inquiry to come to making wise decisions in our daily lives.
