Role play and movement as a universal medium for all disciplines

Dance or rhythmic movement is a means of communication. It is a language, which enables an individual to express himself/ herself freely and in a manner unique to him or her. Through dance, students develop confidence, creativity, teamwork, independent thinking, concentration, focus, an aesthetic sense and inculcate values, organisational skills, improvisational skills and problem- solving skills.

Dance, can also be used as a medium to better relate with other disciplines. In an effort to make the learning of subjects interesting, dance workshops were conducted for Pre-School, Pre Primary and classes 1st - 5th.

Pre School and Pre Primary:

For students of P.S. and P.P, the concept of animals, the sounds they make and their movements were reinforced through the ever popular Passing the parcel game. A parcel containing animal names was passed around ( music played and stopped randomly) and each child would pull out a chit containing the name of an animal which was then to be described in animation. The other children were to guess the animal.

For students of classes 1 and 2, we sought to reinforce listening skills with a listening game. Here, students were to execute what the Leader asked. Each child was named leader by turn and the followers were to act as he or she asked. How well each follower interpreted the command was to be seen!

Another exercise was teaching the students to recognise the movements of animals and their behaviour according to the habitat. An animal statue game was used for this where students were expected to mimic the movement of animals as they recalled. This included, water animals, land animals, animals and birds in cold and hot regions.

For students of class 3, observation skills were reinforced by directing the children to play out the movement of things and persons around them in ordinary situations.

For class 4, Kabirs dohas were expressed through movements. The values that these teach were explained, as was the rhythm in the profound Hindi verses, pointed out.

For class 5, the values of hygiene and health were inculcated through an exercise of as advertisement-designing.
