Premchand Jayanti celebrations across the classes

"Premchand will be relevant as long as human attitude, which is universal, remains the same", said Jameel Gulrays, founder of Katha Kathan, an initiative that seeks to celebrate regional literature.

The Indian School-Second Shift firmly believes in the above mentioned quote and hence we celebrate Premchand Jayanti with great enthusiasm and passion every year. Munshi Premchand, a pen name that is so famous in Hindi and Urdu literature, was one of the most celebrated writers of India. A very prominent writer of his times in the 20th century, he wove words magically and his stories evoked the reality of his times. Premchand was born on 31 July 1880, at a village in Varanasi. Every year this day is observed as Premchand Jayanti.

Students of classes 3 to 10 took keen interest in making this day memorable by participating in numerous activities. Students of class 3 composed short Hindi stories showcasing their writing skills. Class 4 students made beautiful and attractive bookmarks with Premchand's famous quotes on them. A pictorial representation of Premchand's most famous stories was done by the students of class 5, which enhanced their story telling skills.

Class 6 students discussed and wrote about the way Munshi Premchand would have thought and wrote, which they inferred by reading some of his famous stories. Beautiful book covers of his novels and portraits of Shri Premchand were crafted by the pupils of class 7. An article writing session was conducted in class 8 on the topic, 'Contribution of Premchand to Hindi Literature'.

Each student of class 9 chose an interesting incident from the biography of Munshi Premchand, called ‘Kalam Ka Sipahi’ (written by Amritrai), and narrated it in class.

Class 10 students made table calendars in which they wrote the celebrated lines of Premchand's upanyas, along with the name of the upanyas and the year of its publishing.

To make Premchand Jayanti more memorable, the Hindi Department of The Indian School - Second Shift hosted a special interactive session on 28 July, 2023 for the students of classes 6 to 8, which was conducted by Rajkumar Sharma, Assistant Professor of Hindi Literature at Delhi University. The topic of the session was ‘Premchand ki Praasangikta’.

To honour the legendary Hindi writer on his birth anniversary, a special assembly was also conducted, where students  recited his poems, engaged in storytelling and performed a skit based on the story ‘Bade Bhai Sahab’, written by Premchand.

Munshi Premchand made a significant contribution to literature through his insightful and thought-provoking writing that portrayed the social realities of his time. He focused on themes such as poverty, caste discrimination, gender inequality and the struggles of the common man. His works depict the social evils of arranged marriages, the abuses of the British bureaucracy and exploitation of the rural peasantry by moneylenders and officials. The celebration of Premchand Jayanti gave students the golden opportunity to explore his wide range of works. The students and teachers of The Indian School - Second Shift thus paid a handsome tribute to this extraordinary Hindi laureate.
