Pre primary visits the fruit and veggie vendor!

The students of the Pre Primary had the opportunity of visiting and interacting with the at the Mother Diary booth in nearby Sadiq nagar on 18 July 2018 .

The visit was a hands-on experience to complement what was taught in the lesson, Fruits and Vegetables. The children were taken to the Mother Dairy to acquaint and identify the names of various fruits and vegetables available there.

At the outlet, the children took great delight in seeing and touching the fresh fruit and vegetables in the baskets and on the shelves- vegetables and fruit like carrots, ladys fingers, potato, broccoli, pumpkin, pears, etc. The most fascinating vegetables were the pumpkin and bitter gourd- the former was promptly identified by its appearance in Halloween celebrations and the later was well known for its bitter and unpopular taste! The children were encouraged to freely express what they observed about the spread before them. Some named the colours of the fruit, others pointed out the shapes, and yet others said that the fruit felt smooth, uneven or grainy. Some children noticed that the items varied in weight. Some named combinations which they particularly enjoy eating- pumpkin with puri, bhindi with paratha, gajar halwa puri and aloo tamatar amongst many others. The students were also introduced to one seeded and many seeded fruits.

The following day at School, the children were given colouring sheets to complete and fruit and vegetable cards to sort. Their ability to answer questions on the topic was commendable, in our visit has generated a good amount of awareness and curiosity amongst the children.

Having seen a variety of fruit the previous week a Fruit Chaat activity was held in the classroom, where the teachers discussed the benefits of each type of fruit. They were shown how the fruit is peeled/ cut etc. They also learnt to differentiate between the different kinds of fruit on the basis of seeded/ non-seeded varieties.

The teachers explained the value of each type of fruit and vegetable for good health. They also explained the concept of a balanced diet. Expectedly the activity was extremely animated and the children enjoyed facilitating their own learning!
