Nutrition Week (1-7 September, 2024)
“All children should have the basic nutrition they need, to learn and grow and to pursue their dreams, because, in the end, nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our children.”
Michelle Obama
Food and proper nutrition lead to a healthier life. Developing healthy eating habits during childhood sets the foundation for lifelong dietary choices. Children who are exposed to a variety of nutritious foods are more likely to continue making healthy food choices as they grow older.
The Indian School – Second Shift observed Nutrition Week with myriad activities through the week from 1 to 7 September 2024. These five days of celebration were to raise awareness among children about the importance of good nutrition, to encourage them to make healthier food choices, and to involve parents in promoting healthy eating at home. A variety of engaging activities and games were planned through the week to achieve these objectives.
The tiny tots of Pre school participated in a sorting activity on healthy food and junk food. This activity helped them distinguish between healthy and less healthy food choices, understand the concept of nutrition, and make informed decisions about their dietary habits.
The activities in Pre Primary were designed to engage students in both creativity and healthy eating. A vegetable printing activity done by them not only made art fun, but also reinforced the idea that vegetables can be both nutritious and versatile. Students created unique patterns and designs, making it an engaging sensory experience.
Class III students were educated about the benefits of nutritious food through visual and auditory learning. They watched educational videos on healthy eating and recited poems on the benefits of nutritious food. The videos explained the benefits of various foods, the concept of a balanced diet, and the importance of nutrition, in an entertaining manner.
Class IV students engaged themselves in preparing a nutritious meal, wherein they learnt about the health benefits of various salad ingredients. It helped students connect practical cooking skills with broader health concepts, reinforcing the idea that a healthy lifestyle involves more than just one aspect.
The students of classes V and VI engaged in an activity showing healthy meals. Each student shared a lunch box preparation itinerary and the dish they had prepared with the help of their parents. They also engaged in a 'Show and Tell' activity, which helped them understand the nutritional value of different meals. They also made a refreshing watermelon water cooler drink. This hands'-on experience allowed the children to learn about the importance of staying hydrated, especially during the warmer months.
A balanced diet is essential for growth, energy, and overall well being. Keeping this in mind, the students of class VIII created a ‘Healthy Plate’ by arranging pictures of various foods on a paper plate to represent a balanced meal. This activity engaged the students in a hands'-on learning experience that reinforced their understanding of food groups and balanced eating.
The students of class IX participated in a memory game, wherein they matched pairs of cards that featured images or words related to nutrition. These pairs included food groups, healthy foods, essential nutrients, and healthy habits. By matching cards that feature food groups, nutrients, and healthy habits, students not only improved their memory but also gained a better understanding of nutritional concepts.
Class X students engaged in an insightful quiz focused on healthy eating and nutrition. Students showcased their knowledge by answering questions related to various nutrients, dietary guidelines, and the benefits of a well rounded diet. The quiz not only tested their understanding but also encouraged them to make healthier lifestyle choices.
To conclude, Nutrition Week was a resounding success in promoting a deeper understanding of nutrition among students. By combining interactive learning with practical applications, students were equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed dietary choices and appreciate the importance of a balanced diet.
