National Voter's Day celebrations

“The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all.”

- John F. Kennedy

India observes National Voter's Day on January 25th each year. The occasion aims to encourage, facilitate and maximise the enrolment of new voters. This year marked the 12th National Voter's Day and was centred around the theme- ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participative’.

The Indian School-Second Shift expressed its belief in voting by celebrating National Voter's Day with great zeal. 25 January, 1950 was a historic day because it was on this day that the Election Commission of India was established. Voter's Day was initiated in 2011 by the then President of India, Ms Pratibha Devi Patil, on the 61st Foundation Day of the Election Commission of India.

To mark the significance of this day, the students of Pre-School to class VIII participated in essay writing and debate, poster designing and classroom discussions. The commemoration was observed in all the classes on Tuesday, 25th  January 2022 virtually. Students shared the importance of voting and also compared the different democracies around the world and how election helps a country to develop.

Pre School and the Pre Primary were shown a video on the importance of voting. They made posters based on this year’s theme.

Students of classes 1 and 2 participated in contests like slogan writing and quiz which helped reiterate the importance of every vote through creative expression.

Students of classes 3 and 4 made beautiful drawings on the theme with the SNS Hashtag #NVD2022. They discussed the significance of the day and were made aware of their democratic rights and power to elect a representative.

Students of classes 5-8 were also told about the significance of the commemoration. They expressed their thoughts by making beautiful posters and also shared how important a duty of the citizen it is, to vote for the right leader. They brainstormed on how we can make our elections more inclusive and the importance of holding elections in our country.

All staff and officers in state government departments/PSUs et  took the NVD pledge, following appropriate Covid norms, at 11 a.m on 25th January. The photographs of the pledge-taking ceremony were uploaded using the hashtag #NVD2022, on the School  website.

National Voter's Day not only encourages and teaches the youth to participate in the electoral process but also ingrain that the right to vote is a basic right.
