Museum Learning Master Class - The power of objects at the National Museum.

Its not just the students who enjoy learning by doing the teachers too eagerly wait for such opportunities! A museum learning master class was organised by at the National Museum on August 7, 2018.

The aim of the class was to introduce the pedagogy of museum-learning and bring forward practices that allow an integration of museum objects and environment to support classroom themes. The methodology aims to facilitate a trans-disciplinary mindset in education. Through an exploration of the museum, the session demonstrates strategies of promoting an enquiry- based approach to learning, thereby fostering the development of 21st century skills. The class was attended by Ms. Sarita Gupta and Ms. Yahvi Seth.

The session began with a gallery walk where we were made to walk around the museum, looking at the artefacts on display whilst the resource person explained. We were told about the four types of questions that can be formed, namely- sensory, inferential, imaginative and philosophical. There were a couple of activities conducted too which included the 10 times 2, freeze frame and open and shut. There was a role play where we were asked to play class 5 students. The entire session was very interesting and engaging.

As a Social Studies teacher it felt great to learn and understand how wonderfully the artefacts at the museum could become a powerful teaching tool and an aid to build visual literacy. We look forward to making the most of this learning and using it, in turn, to give our students the best learning experience.
