Mathematics Week during 20-24 Nov 2021
Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.— Shakuntala Devi
Mathematics helps us understand the world and provides an effective way of building mental discipline. Math encourages logical reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, abstract or spatial thinking, problem-solving ability, and even effective communication skills.
Keeping this in mind, The Indian School- Second Shift organised Mathematics Week from 20 to 24 November, 2021. The week exhibited dextrous activities by our little mathematicians to gain proficiency in mathematical concepts with a new sense of enquiry.
Our Pre schoolers had a great time with online quizzes to strengthen quantification of numbers up to 40 and presented their understanding of shapes creating different shapes using kidney beans, dry fruit etc. The Pre-primary students added numbers by creating a pencil Math game craft to master the addition concept.
The students of class 1 comprehended the measurement of weight and time in a fun way by making weighing scales and analog clocks with recycled materials.
Class 2 students played online quizzes to estimate kilograms, grams, meters and centimetres. The students labelled the objects available at home by estimating their weight and length. They keenly observed the weight written on the backs of packaged food items and sorted them in grams and kilograms.
The students of classes 3 and 4 diligently engaged their skilful minds with fractions with beautiful crafts, representing a fraction wheel to show and tell and peacocks using half, quarter and one-eighth of the coloured sheet in the virtual classroom.
Class 5 students made a layout of their dream home and calculated the area and perimeter of the respective rooms. They also measured the dimensions of their bedrooms and gained a real-time and thorough understanding of area and perimeter concepts. The students artistically presented 3D shaped models by making Christmas trees.
Mr. Karmendra Bhardwaj took a special session on mathematical reasoning and resolved students’ doubts with an ingenious approach. Classes 6,7 and 8 unfolded the facts behind mathematical reasoning and solved the trickiest sums at their levels.
Vedic math expert, Mr. P Devraj, took an entrancing session on Vedic Mathematics for classes 4 to 8. He impressively wove the session to cater to the needs of the different class levels. He showed Vedic maths methods based on a collection of Sutras to solve maths calculations in a fast and easy way.
Maths Week was truly an ameliorating experience for the students across classes.
